Freshman Elijah Jordan (20) has been rock solid in the backcourt for DP

Men's Basketball takes down Edgewater
1/24/2014 10:59:00 PM

Every year, without fail and regardless of each other's record, you can expect a great Men's Basketball game between Dr. Phillips and Edgewater and last night in the House of Payne, that's exactly what happened. DP (15-7) took an early lead it never relinquished in a 62-49 victory over the visiting Eagles. After ending the first quarter up 13-10, the Panthers pulled away steadily in the second as freshman guard Elijah Jordan ignited the offense out of the break with a long three and freshman Nick Smith followed with a layup to highlight a 7-0 run. Senior guard  Ira Warren, who along with senior center Glenn Jay were honored pregame for Senior Night, gave DP three buckets from beyond the arc as the lead swelled to 11 at the half, 30-19. The game got away from Edgewater in third as the DP defense held the Eagles to just eight points while the offense summarily had everyone involved. Junior guard Wilkins Desir opened up the second half with a strong rebound and put-back and Jonathan Laurent pushed the lead to 34-19 with a reverse layup with 6:13 on the clock. Junior guard David Stephen buried a long three, Nick Smith broke free for a wide open layup and Stephen dropped in a short bucket in the lane for a 41-27 lead at the 1:16 mark. Jonathan Laurent, who finished with a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds, scored on back to back layups as the third quarter horn sounded with DP up 45-27. Laurent opened the fourth quarter with a fall-away 15-footer and punctuated his night with a thundering tomahawk dunk at 4:46. Edgewater found themselves down by as many as 20 midway through the quarter but went on a 6-0 run before Elijah Jordan stuffed the momentum from the top of the arc as his three circled the rim and rolled in to push the margin back to 17. Perhaps the biggest cheer from the Blue Zoo came when crowd favorite Glenn Jay banked in a layup with less than a minute remaining in the final home regular season game of his career.  Senior Ira Warren finished with 11 points and four rebounds in his final call as well. Freshman Chaundee Brown earned a tough eight points and six rebounds, Elijah Jordan had eight points, five assists and four rebounds and David Stephen shook off a sprained ankle to close out with five points, four rebounds and four assists. DP will finish up the regular season on the road next week starting at Jones Tuesday night.
