Freshman point guard Tiffany Tolbert (2013)

Women's Basketball takes District title
2/2/2014 4:35:00 PM

Friday night in the House of Payne, freshman Tiffany Tolbert had arguably her best game of her DP career, finishing with 19 points and eight assists in Women's Basketball's 68-48 victory over Boone in the District Championship. For the Panthers (20-7), it marked their fourth consecutive title and to be fair, it was never in doubt. Tolbert started off hot with eight first quarter points and Katrina Reeves buried a pair of threes as the opening period ended with a 16-7 DP lead. The two would combine for 24 of the team's 31 points in the first half. With 1:02 left, Tolbert dribbled upcourt and ran into a double team but found Reeves alone on the right arc for another three to give DP a 31-22 lead at the break. Reeves finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. In the third quarter, Jade Cheek opened the scoring with a ten-foot jumper and Tolbert banked one in off the glass to extend the DP lead to 35-22, prompting a Boone timeout. It didn't slow down the Panthers, though, as Ionna McKenzie used a pair of power moves inside en route to seven straight points for a 42-27 lead. McKenzie registered 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. With 12 seconds left, Tiffany Tolbert delivered a dagger with a three from the top of the arc for a 45-29 lead heading into the final period. Scoring came from across the board in the fourth as the Panthers built as much as a 22-point lead. Jah-Nay Anderson (ten points) dropped a pair of three-pointers from the right corner to highlight a 23-point barrage as the Panthers cruised to their seventh consecutive victory and their ninth over Boone dating back to 2010. West Orange will come into the House of Payne Thursday night in the Regional Quarterfinal at 7:00 pm.
