Senior forward Katrina Reeves (2013)

DP storms past West Orange
2/7/2014 11:03:00 AM

Katrina Reeves gave the crowd an indication of things to come when she drained a pair of first quarter three pointers and the senior went on to hit seven from downtown to lead Women’s Basketball to a resounding 63-39 victory over West Orange. Reeves finished with a game-high 21 points and added seven rebounds and four assists as the Panthers advance to the Regional Semifinals Tuesday night at Apopka. West Orange tried to slow down the DP charge by holding the basketball in the final two minutes of the first quarter with DP up, 9-6, but missed a long three on their final shot which was an omen for the rest of the game. DP (21-7) exploded for a 10-0 run in the second quarter led by Reeves, whose deep three from the right arc put the Panthers up 14-6, forcing a Warrior timeout. The waves kept coming, however, as freshman Tiffany Tolbert (15 points, eight assists, five steals) converted back-to-back steals into layups for a 22-8 lead, forcing another West Orange timeout. Reeves connected on  another three and Jade Cheek followed suit with one of her own to push the lead to 31-11. Ionna McKenzie, who finished with 11 points and 16 rebounds, earned one of each with a put-back bucket off the glass and Tolbert closed out the half with a 16-foot jumper to send the Panthers into the half up 35-15. DP kept pushing in the third quarter, opening up with a 15-6 run capped by Reeves’ three from the left arc for a 29-point lead and later in the fourth, DP kept the threes raining down as Reeves (2) and Jade Cheek hit three in a row en route to the 63-39 final.
