Jess Robinson blocks a penalty shot against Winter Park (2014)

Women's Polo falls in overtime
4/3/2014 1:40:00 AM

Women's Water Polo held a 4-3 lead going into the fourth quarter, fell behind a goal late in the game, tied the game in the final seconds to send it to overtime but couldn't close the deal as they fell to Olympia, 6-5 , in the Metro West Championship game.  DP allowed a quick goal in the first minute off a penalty shot but tied the score at 1-1 when Allie Magrino took a pass from Jacqueline James and deposited it into the left corner with 1:15 left in the quarter. Olympia went up 2-1 in the second quarter but  DP responded immediately as Jillian Goulden knotted the score at 2-2 off an Allie Magrino assist at 4:43. In the third quarter, the Panthers took their first lead of the game when Allie Magrino batted home a pass from Maddie Magrino at the 3:14 mark but Olympia tied the game 13 seconds later. Junior Rikki Price staked DP to a 4-3 lead with a penalty shot goal into the upper right 90 less than 30 seconds later but that was the last lead they would own. Olympia scored twice in 45 seconds early in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead but Rikki Price rose up and rocketed a game-tying goal into the lower right corner with 24 seconds left in regulation to send it to overtime. Unfortunately for DP, a power play goal by Olympia 64 seconds into overtime would be the difference as the Panthers fall to 12-3 on the season. Both teams are expected to meet again for the District Championship game April 16th. Statistically, Rikki Price finished with two goals and two steals; Allie Magrino two goals, four steals and an assist; Jillian Goulden with a goal; Emily Kliewer with an assist and a steal; Maddie Magrino an assist, two steals; Jacqueline James with an assist and Julia James an assist. Unquestionably the best performance of the night was turned in by junior goaltender Jessica Robinson, who finished with a career-high 20 saves and added a pair of steals. DP will now travel down to Miami for the Ransom Everglades Tournament Friday and Saturday.
