Softball stuns Apopka
4/4/2014 12:53:00 AM

Riding a  month-long wave of confidence and energy, DP Softball traveled up to Apopka to face a Blue Darter team that not only had beaten them soundly earlier this season (12-2) but also a team the Panthers had not beaten since 2011. None of that mattered to Caitlyn Jones, however, as the junior right-hander pitched a complete game three-hitter, striking out six, in DP's 2-1 victory, their school-record ninth consecutive win! The Panthers (13-7) got on the board in the top of the first when Donna Ryan walked, Kaley Eastwood rapped a single to center and Sarah Kollas followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Ryan for a 1-0 lead. Fast forward to the third inning where Ryan led off with a double , went to third on a bunt single by Marisa Lagos and scored on an error to double the lead to 2-0. From there, Jones was dominant but had some great help in the field. A one-out triple in the bottom of the third threatened to cut into the DP lead but a line-out to Diggy Rodriguez at third and a strikeout by Jones killed the Apopka rally. Jones retired the side in the fourth and fifth innings before Apopka picked up an unearned run in the sixth. With two outs and a runner on second, shortstop Kaley Eastwood fielded a grounder and fired to Rodriguez at third to gun down the runner, keeping the DP lead for good. The Panthers will head to Freedom this afternoon.
