Men's Basketball tames two Winters
1/31/2015 8:21:00 PM

In the House of Payne Friday night, our Metro West Champion Men's Basketball team hosted Metro East Champion Winter Park in front of the season's largest crowd and the Panthers sent the DP faithful home happy with a 75-59 victory. After an 18-18 first quarter, the Panthers (17-7) streaked to a 10-0 run triggered by a pair of breakaway buckets by Chaundee Brown (11 points, nine rebounds). Nicholas Smith (ten points) gave the Panthers a 13-point advantage, 35-22, at the 1:56 mark  after a pair of baskets and a free throw. David Stephen capped the half with a deep three from the left arc to send DP into the locker room up 38-27. The second half saw Winter Park claw their way back into the game, cutting their deficit to seven, but senior Jonathan Laurent scored 17 of his team-high 23 points in the half and David Stephen hit for eight of his 16 points to lead the Panthers to their 11th consecutive victory.

From the House of Payne, Men's Basketball traveled down I-4 today to Bartow to close out their brutal regular season schedule at the Mosaic Stinger Shootout against the Winter Haven Blue Devils, who came into the game nearly as hot as the Panthers, . Malik William had the best game of his high school career, scoring a team-high 23 points and ripping down a school-record 22 rebounds to go with eight blocks and four assists as DP picked up their 12th straight victory, 73-67. William registered a double-double by the third quarter and punctuated his night with a two-handed dunk at the 4:56 mark of the fourth quarter that extended DP's lead to 15 at 63-48. After the lead reached 18 with under two minutes left, Winter Haven went on a strong 10-0 run but the outcome had already been decided in a game whose score was not as close as it seemed at the end. Chaundee Brown had another strong performance with 15 points and six rebounds, Jon Laurent closed out with 13 points, four rebounds and four assists, Elijah Jordan chipped in 12 points and David Stephen finished with 12 assists. Malik William's 22 rebounds broke the old record of 21 set by Walter Perkins (1992) and James Ford (1993) and his 13 defensive rebounds eclipsed Perkins' mark of 12, also set back in 1992. DP (18-7) will now focus on the District Tournament beginning Wednesday at Freedom High School where the top-seeded Panthers will take on fourth-seeded Cypress Creek at 6:00 pm.

Men's JV Basketball took down Winter Park with authority last night, 67-28, as Norris Jenkins and Daniel Love each scored 15 points while Justin Wilkins added 13. Saturday morning they headed back to Foundation Academy for the final day of the Windermere Prep Tournament and took care of Colonial with a thorough 61-38 victory. Davarius Bargnare led with 18 points, Hnric Murry had 12 and Daniel Love finished with eight points. That sent DP into the final game of the season against Montverde Academy but a tip-in at the buzzer gave the Eagles a 50-49 victory over the Panthers. DP closed out their season with a solid record of 14-6.
