Sophomore forward Nicholas Smith (30) gets the putback vs. Ocoee (2014)

Men's Basketball stuns Evans again
2/12/2015 11:58:00 PM

Fourth-ranked Men's Basketball got a game-high 24 points, 11 rebounds and six assists from Jonathan Laurent and unbelievably clutch second-half shooting from sophomore Nicholas Smith as the Panthers stunned top-ranked Evans, 72-62, in the Regional Quarterfinal. After a tight first half that saw both teams head into the break tied at 27-27, DP (20-8) pulled ahead late in the third quarter. A pair of threes by Smith and senior guard David Stephen built a 45-39 lead heading into the fourth. From there, the Panthers went on a 9-0 run to open the final quarter highlighted by Nick Smith's three and a pair of critical buckets by Justin Tucker that gave the Panthers a 54-39 advantage. Evans, which earned championship game berths the last two years, expectedly fought their way back to cut the DP lead to just four, 68-64, with under two minutes remaining. Though the Panthers struggled a bit from the free throw line most of the game, they hit five of eight down the stretch to ice their second victory over Evans this season. With the victory, DP has now extended their phenomenal streak of 20-win seasons to 22 consecutive years. DP had four players finish in double digit scoring with Laurent, Smith (13 points, five rebounds), David Stephen (12 points, six assists) and Chaundee Brown (11 points, seven rebounds). Dr. Phillips will now head back to Boone Tuesday night at 7:00 pm for the Regional Semifinal and a rematch of last week's District Championship game.
