DJ Charles rushed for a pair of touchdowns in DP's 30-18 Regional Quarterfinal victory over Steinbrenner to earn the Apex Wealth Management Player of the Game (2015)

Football advances to Regional Semifinal

Junior running back DJ Charles scored two touchdowns to lift Dr. Phillips Football to a 30-18 victory over Steinbrenner in the Regional Quarterfinal. A dismal offensive showing in the first half that saw the Panthers, down 10-9 and seemingly unable to get out of their own way, become an offensive showcase in the second half. DP found itself down three times but continued to fight before pulling away in the fourth quarter. The Panthers (8-3) scored on three consecutive second half possessions and took a knee three times at the Steinbrenner one yard line to close out the game.

After Steinbrenner opened up the game with a 45-yard field goal on its first possession, the DP special teams put the Panthers on the board when Alvin Bryant blocked a Warrior punt out of the back of the end zone for a safety to cut the margin to 3-2. Offensive penalties and miscues peppered the offense through their first four drives but the Panthers got it together midway through the second quarter. With great starting field position at the Steinbrenner 43, Demaria Washington carried three times for 18 yards down to the 25 and DJ Charles took the next two for 12 more. On first and ten, Charles got the call, slid through two linemen, stepped over a linebacker and drove through a safety into the end zone for DP's first touchdown. Down 9-3, Steinbrenner was forced to punt after three consecutive incompletions but a DP fumble on the punt return kept the Warriors on the field. Five players later, Steinbrenner regained the lead with a 23-yard touchdown pass to head into the locker room up 10-9.

The Panthers came out more focused and energized in the second half. After holding Steinbrenner to just 13 yards on their first two possessions, DP took over at their own ten and committed to the ground attack. Emare Hogan, Alvin Bryant, Demaria Washington and DJ Charles chipped off gains of four and five yards a carry until Charles capped the ten-play, 90-yard drive with a 41-yard touchdown run. Charles followed a sensational block by Kenny Palmer, deked the safety off his feet and outran the secondary for his second score of the night. Up 15-10, DP elected to go for two. Quarterback Marvin Washington threw a screen pass to Jaquarius Bargnare and the senior speedster raced for the corner and dove over the pylon to give the Panthers a 17-10 lead as the third quarter came to a close. Steinbrenner fought back again on their opening drive of the fourth, however. A 42-yard pass play highlighted a nine-play drive that covered 75 yards and after a successful two-point conversion, the Warriors were back on top, 18-17. But DP never panicked. They went right back to the ground game and marched 51 yards in eight plays before Marvin Washington found Emare Hogan in the back of the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown pass. With a 23-18 lead, the DP defense forced two incompletions on Steinbrenner's next drive and senior Tashaun Lindquist came up with the defensive play of the game, pouncing on a fumble to give the Panthers possession at the Warriors' 16 yard line. After a five yard penalty, Jaquarius Bargnare drove the final nail in the coffin with a 21-yard touchdown run down the left sideline for the 30-18 final.

Defensively, the Panthers were sensational, allowing just two net yards of rushing while as a team outgaining Steinbrenner, 386-141. Junior Dylan Meeks finished with 13 tackles, junior Nick Smith added 12, including a pair of sacks and junior Robert Porcher finished with nine tackles, with a hand in three sacks as well. Amos Louis (11 tackles), Nigel Alexander (ten tackles) and James Green (nine tackles) were defensive standouts as well. DP will now focus on Bradenton Manatee in the Regional Semifinal at home next week. Manatee dispatched Oak Ridge, 32-14, and will make their second trip to Dr. Phillips in as many years. Last year the Hurricanes knocked the Panthers out of the playoffs with a 24-21 victory in the Regional Championship. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm with tickets on sale at the gate for $8.00 each.
