Football run ends in Regional Final

Riding a seven game winning streak, which included a dominating victory a week earlier against Bradenton Manatee, Dr. Phillips Football saw their season come to a heartbreaking end in a 20-19 loss to visiting Osceola. DP (9-4) spotted the visiting Kowboys a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but the defense settled down and didn't allow a score for the final 41 minutes of the game. After the Panthers rebounded with 19 straight points to take a 19-14 lead, Osceola's defense stepped up with a 16-yard interception return for the game-winning touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

Offensively, DP struggled in the early going, punting three times and turning it over on downs in their first four possessions. But Jaquarius Bargnare's 11-yard punt return with 2:41 left in the first half set the Panthers up at the Osceola 48 and DP got things rolling. After Emare Hogan picked up a big first down with a four-yard run, DJ Charles followed up with a five-yard gain to the Osceola 31. Two plays later, quarterback Marvin Washington got tremendous protection from his offensive line and fired a 31-yard strike to Jaquarius Bargnare who leaped high in the end zone and came down with his seventh touchdown reception of the season to cut the deficit in half, 14-7.

Sophomore Chance Bush opened the second half with a 33-yard kickoff return to give the Panthers possession at the DP 45 and it took just three plays for the Panthers to strike again. Consecutive short gains by Emare Hogan set up senior Alvin Bryant's spectacular 50-yard touchdown run down the right sideline and just 81 seconds into the third quarter, DP pulled within one, 14-13. After four consecutive drives that amassed just 12 yards, Osceola finally started moving the football. The Kowboys marched 51 yards in ten plays but on second and seven at the DP 24, Osceola fullback Laderrian Wilson ran into Jonathan Pollock at the line of scrimmage, fumbled the football and Tanner Ingle pounced on it to give DP possession at the 23. On the next play, quarterback Emare Hogan took the snap, appeared to be bottled up at the line but knifed his way through and scampered 77 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 5:21 left in the third. DP's defense continued to dominate, led by junior Dylan Meeks who shattered three school records on the night, eclipsing his own records for tackles in a game (24), tackles in a season (158) and breaking Charles Favors' record (2006-2009) for tackles in a career with 385.

After forcing Osceola to punt with 8:22 left in the fourth quarter and hanging onto a 19-14 lead, DP took over at their own 11 yard line. After consecutive one-yard gains by Demaria Washington, the Panthers faced third and eight at the 13. An errant snap was scooped up by Emare Hogan who avoided a sack, stepped to his right and looked to hit Caleb Walls but under intense pressure, Hogan wasn't able to see Osceola linebacker Trey Shine, who picked off the pass and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown to give Osceola a 20-19 lead with 6:53 left in the game. The Panthers had two final drives to pull off the victory but the first resulted in a punt. With just 1:46 left in the game, Marvin Washington hit Alvin Bryant for 17 yards and Jaquarius Bargnare for two passes and 20 more yards to the DP 43. Unfortunately that was as far as the drive would go as the final three passes fell incomplete.

While the season ended in heartbreaking fashion, this was another tremendous year for the Panthers. They overcame difficult early season losses, rallied for their eighth consecutive District Championship, earned two impressive playoff victories and have set the bar higher for next year, where the Panthers look to return eight starters on offense and seven more on defense.
