Men's Basketball pulls away from Evans
12/17/2015 10:29:00 PM

After trailing by two at halftime and leading by just three after three quarters, Men's Basketball went on a 15-4 surge to start the fourth quarter en route to a 76-67 victory over Evans and in the process, netted head coach Anthony Long his 300th victory in his 14th season at Dr. Phillips. Senior Richard McKenzie poured in 23 points along with five rebounds and five blocks while senior Justin Tucker added 15 points and ripped down a game-high 17 rebounds. DP (6-1) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to open the game after a pair of baskets by Daniel Love (12 points, eight rebounds) but Evans (8-4) went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-14 lead. Justin Tucker rattled home a two-handed dunk to reclaim the lead with a minute to go and Richard McKenzie sank a long three and followed with a layup to give the Panthers a 21-17 lead at the end of the first. Evans took advantage of some sloppy play by the Panthers in the second quarter as the teams exchanged leads five times before the Trojans went into the halftime break up 37-35. In the third quarter, the DP defense clamped down and the tide turned dramatically in DP's favor. After Richard McKenzie's ten foot jumper tied the game at 37-37, Justin Tucker snagged a rebound and simultaneously slammed it home to spark an 8-1 run for a 47-40 lead at the 4:40 mark. With a 53-50 lead heading into the fourth, DP steadily pulled away as Richard McKenzie accounted for nine of DP's first 11 points to give them their then-largest lead, 64-54. Evans tried to rally with four minutes remaining but a put-back bucket followed by a phenomenal block on the glass by Tucker kept the lead at 13 points. The Panthers closed it out on the foul line with four free throws by Je'Quan Burton, who finished with five points and six assists. Junior Nick Smith had a strong game with ten points and five rebounds while Jaquarius Bargnare celebrated his birthday with seven points and a pair of assists. DP will take on Flagler Palm Coast Saturday night at 8:00 pm at the Silver Star Recreation Center before heading to the Hernando Tournament next week.

JV Basketball kept its record perfect (5-0) with a 70-52 victory over Evans led by Dante Love (19 points) and Davarius Bargnare (15 points). Freshmen Basketball also stays undefeated at 5-0 after a 52-30 victory over Evans. Devon Buckhanon led the Panthers with 18 points. Both squads will pick things back up January 5th at Freedom.
