Flag Football returns to top of District

After falling to Boone in the season opener, 20-19, DP Flag Football went on a tear, winning eight straight games (seven by shutout) with eyes on the inevitable rematch in the District Championship. Last night in the Spoone, DP reclaimed their district dominance with a 13-6 victory over the Braves to secure the program’s tenth title and sixth in the past seven years. After a scoreless first quarter, Kaylee Messina put the Panthers on the board in the second with a three-yard touchdown run and completed the extra point pass to Nisa Costa for a 7-0 lead that extended into the break. Boone threatened to tie in the third quarter after driving down to the DP five yard line but the Panther defense held firm, breaking up four passes (Nisa Costa, Jordin Ferguson, and two by Megan Lapeyrouse) for a turnover on downs. In the fourth quarter, DP struck again. Facing third and goal, Kaylee Messina found Jordin Ferguson on a short five-yard pass and Ferguson split the defense down the center of the field for a 19-yard touchdown to push the lead to 13-0. Boone would respond with a score late in the fourth quarter but the extra point pass was picked off by Jordin Ferguson. With just over a minute remianing, the Panthers were able to pick up a pair of critical first downs by Gianna Fischetti and run out the clock. Messina had a tremendous day, completing 27 passes, while Gianna Fischetti and Jordin Ferguson each caught six passes. Nisa Costa led the defense with four flag pulls. DP advances to the first round state play-in game and will host Martin County next Friday at 7:00 pm.
