Senior Maddie Magrino won the 500 freestyle title and placed second in the 200 free while sophomore Kayla Smith won the 100 backstroke and placed fourth in the 100 fly as Women's Swimming placed third as a team at the Metro West Conference Championship Wednesday night. DP also won the gold medal in the 200 free relay with Kayla Smith, Caroline Grzeszczak, Roseleen Olivares and Maddie Magrino in arguably the most exciting finish of the night. In the anchor leg, DP trailed Olympia by a body length but Magrino exploded off her turn and touched the wall one one-hundredth of a second ahead of Olympia to give DP the title. DP had plenty of top eight finishes to be proud of, including a second place finish by the 400 free relay team of Smith, Grzeszczak, Olivares and Magrino, just six hundredths of a second off the gold; Paola Hernandez in the 100 breast (third) and 500 free (sixth), Roseleen Olivares in the 200 IM (third) and 100 fly (sixth), the 200 medley relay team of Emma Chapman, Paola Hernandez, Julia James and Julia Batzer (third), Caroline Grzeszczak in the 200 free (fourth) and 100 free (fifth), Emma Chapman in the 50 free (fourth) and 100 back (sixth), Julia James in the 200 IM (sixth) and 100 fly (eighth) and Gunjan Devnani in the 500 free (eighth). DP will prepare next for the District Championship at the Aquatic Center October 21st.
