Je'Quan Burton's 5 catches for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 38-0 victory over Freedom earns him the Apex Wealth Management Player of the Game (2016)

Football notches second straight shutout

Dr. Phillips Football improved to 5-2 on the season and extended their District winning streak to 34 consecutive games dating back through 2008 with a 38-0 victory over Freedom on Senior Night. Emare Hogan accounted for 125 all-purpose yards and scored twice while junior Je'Quan Burton pulled down five catches for 104 yards and two scores. Senior defensive end Robert Porcher registered ten tackles, including seven for loss, with a career-high four sacks and an interception.

DP's opening drive of the game was flawless as they marched 42 yards in just five plays, all on the back of Emare Hogan. The senior got the start at quarterback and after a 17-yard kickoff return by Devodney Alford, Hogan carried five times for 38 yards, capped off by a two-yard touchdown run to put the Panthers up 7-0 at 10:21. DP's next two drives stalled in Freedom territory but with 4:26 left in the second quarter, the lead doubled. From the Panthers' 29, runs by Xandre McCleary (five yards), Emare Hogan (15 yards) and Kenny Palmer (nine yards) put the ball at the Freedom 42. On second and one, Hogan went up top to Je'Quan Burton for a 42-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead. DP's defense, which held Freedom to just 156 yards on the night, forced a three and out to give the Panthers one final shot to add to their margin before halftime. Tanner Ingle nearly broke free for his sixth return score of the year but was forced out of bounds at the 13 after a 33-yard punt return. As time expired, Sterling Stockwell split the uprights from 35 yards out for a 17-0 lead at the break.

Freedom put together their best drive of the night on the opening possession of the second half, driving 67 yards in 16 plays but senior defensive end Robert Porcher intercepted a second down pass to thwart Freedom's threat. DP capitalized quickly on the opportunity. Senior quarterback Marvin Washington found Davarius Bargnare for a gain of 39 down to the Freedom 29 and four plays later, on fourth and 15, Washington lured the defensive line back, dumped a quick screen to Emare Hogan, and Hogan knifed his way through the secondary 34 yards into the end zone to make it 24-0 with 2:30 remaining in the quarter. Things went south quickly for Freedom on their ensuing possession. After a seven-yard sack by Robert Porcher forced a punt, sophomore Marcus Tillman charged into the backfield and blocked the punt near the goal line and the ball was scooped up by senior Darrian Hibbert and returned six yards to the Freedom three. Senior Kenny Palmer got the call next and busted through for a DP touchdown from three yards out as the lead grew to 31-0 with 11:44 left in the fourth quarter. The Panther defense forced Freedom's seventh punt and gave the offense the ball back at the Freedom 48. Marvin Washngton found Je'Quan Burton for a 24-yard gain to the 19 yard line and later on fourth and five, Washington hit Burton again on a screen. Senior Arvis Evans threw a magnificent block, Burton spun out of a tackle at the six and leaped into the end zone from the three to give the Panthers a 38-0 final score. Sophomore linebacker Cameron Williams had a career-high ten tackles and a sack while senior linebacker Willmane Toussaint finished with nine tackles. The DP defense had four finish with seven stops each: Marcus Tillman, Jaquarri Powell, Nick Smith and Joe Gulla.

The Panthers will now focus their attention on Olympia (5-1), who is currently riding a five-game winning streak, next Friday night on the road. DP has defeated the Titans every year since 2004, a streak of 13 straight victories (including two playoff wins) and owns a 15-2 record in the series. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm and the winner will clinch the District Championship. Be advised, the crowd is expected to be overflowing so arrive early.
