Defense suffocates Evans in season finale
11/5/2016 3:19:00 PM

Dr. Phillips Football put on a defensive clinic in their final game of the regular season, limiting host Evans to just 116 yards of total offense with a school-record eight turnovers in a 48-9 victory. Junior defensive end Joe Gulla's 11-yard fumble return for a touchdown also gave the Panthers the season record for return touchdowns (10) while the team's six fumble recoveries also set a school record previously set in 1988 vs. Boone and again in 2009 against Osceola.

DP (8-2) jumped on Evans on their opening drive of the game, driving 57 yards in just four plays. Quarterback Marvin Washington hit Je'Quan Burton for 15 yards on the first play and followed up with a nine-yard pass to Devodney Alford and finished with a 25-yard strike to Davarius Bargnare for a 7-0 lead. On Evans' ensuing possession, the DP defense got in on the action with the first turnover of the night. On third and eight from the Evans 30, junior defensive end Brice Ingram ripped the ball free after a five-yard completion and Joe Gulla pounced on the fumble to give the Panthers possession deep in Trojan territory but they couldn't capitalize on the gift. Evans would recover a DP fumble and despite connecting on a 61-yard pass play to the DP ten, the Trojans had to settle for a 24-yard field goal to close the gap to 7-3 at 5:23. That was as close as they would get the rest of the way. With 35 seconds left in the first quarter, Robert Porcher recovered a fumble at the Evans 15 and Emare Hogan made them pay with a 15-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 14-3. DP picked up great field position at their own 48 early in the second quarter and took all of three plays to get in the end zone again. Marvin Washington ran for 29 yards and a first down and Devodney Alford followed up with a 20-yard touchdown run to make it 21-3 at the 10:08 mark. That set up a string of five consecutive offensive turnovers for the Trojans. Darrian Hibbert knocked the ball out at the DP 27 and DJ Charles recovered with 5:32 to play and the Panthers looked primed to take it in again. But on fourth and goal, DP lined up for a field goal but an errant snap was scooped up by Evans and returned 87 yards for a score. DJ Charles blocked the extra point attempt and despite being outplayed on both sides of the ball, Evans only trailed, 21-9, at the half.

Things took a considerable turn for the worse in the third quarter, though. A sack by Marcus Tillman caused a fumble that was recovered by Christian Williams and one drive later, freshman Stephen Dix intercepted the first pass of his career and returned it 24 yards to the Evans 13. Three plays later, Emare Hogan called his own number and took it in from eight yards out as the lead grew to 28-9. DP notched its fourth consecutive turnover just two plays later as Henry Caldwell picked off his third pass of the season and returned it 21 yards to set up a six-yard touchdown run by Kenny Palmer. Up 35-9, the Panthers set the school record for return scores in a season when Joe Gulla scooped up a loose ball and took it in from the 11 for a 42-9 lead with 4:12 left in the third. The Panthers would close out the night with a 41-yard scoring drive culminated by a one-yard run by Xandre McCleary for the 48-9 final.

Defensively, Joe Gulla led the charge with eight tackles and a pair of fumble recoveries while Stephen Dix finished with seven tackles and an interception. Marcus Tillman had one of his best games as a Panther with six tackles, a sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Offensively, Marvin Washington threw for 166 yards and a score on eight of 14 passing while also rushing for 60 yards on just five carries. Kenny Palmer finished with 43 yards on five carries and Devodney Alford was the leading receiver with two catches for 60 yards. DP will now set their sights on Bradenton Manatee in the Regional Quarterfinal game Friday night in the Spoone at 7:30.
