Tanner Ingle returns a punt 62 yards for a touchdown in DP's 37-34 victory over Seminole to send DP to the 2016 State Championship

Football outlasts Seminole in State Semifinal
12/3/2016 2:57:00 PM

In arguably the most convincing display of heart and determination in the history of the program, Dr. Phillips Football overcame an 11-point halftime deficit on the road and knocked out previously undefeated Seminole, 37-34 in overtime, to punch a ticket to the State Championship. With the game tied at 27-27 at the end of regulation, the teams exchanged touchdowns in the opening overtime period, but in the second overtime, junior Sterling Stockwell split the uprights from 19 yards out to give DP a three-point lead. Seminole had an opportunity to win the game with a touchdown but the DP defense, visibly exhausted from a veritable slugfest all game long, found enough fight left to force Seminole into a game-tying field goal attempt. On first down, Dylan Meeks, Christian Williams   and Japerri Powell came up big with a tackle for a loss of one, while on third and goal from the 11 yard line, Meeks, Nick Smith and Henry Caldwell combined to stop a run at the five.  On fourth and goal, Seminole attempted a 22-yard field goal from the left hash mark. The snap was clean, the hold was there and the kick had plenty of distance but luck was finally on DP's side this time when the ball clanged off the left goalpost and fell back onto the field. Before the ball even hit the earth, the Panther Nation erupted and the players stormed onto the field in celebration as DP heads back to the State Championship for the first time since 2010.

Friday night's game had plenty of history behind it as DP and Seminole met in the 2010 State Semifinal but that game was clearly all DP as the top-ranked Panthers rolled to a 37-13 victory. In the rematch, Seminole came in ranked number four in Class 8A while DP finished the regular season unranked by the Associated Press, garnering not a single vote. On the first two drives of the game, that seemed to make sense. After DP stalled near midfield, the Seminoles drove straight down the field, 83 yards in seven plays aided by two 15-yard defensive penalties, to take a 7-0 lead. The Panthers couldn't muster anything on their ensuing possession but the defense and special teams stepped up as they've done all season long. After the defense forced Seminole into a three and out, Tanner Ingle fielded a punt at the DP 38, slipped past a crushing block by Emare Hogan and picked up blocks from Dylan Meeks and Jaquarri Powell en route to a 62-yard touchdown; his record-setting sixth return score of the season. Down 7-6 in the second quarter, the offense got rolling as the ground game came alive. From the 25, the Panthers methodically drove 75 yards in ten plays in just over four minutes, capped by Kenny Palmer's 24-yard touchdown run right up the gut to give DP a 13-7 lead with 6:20 left in the half. The lead didn't last long, however, as Seminole counterpunched with a 76-yard touchdown drive to take a 14-13 lead. On the kickoff, Seminole recovered an onside kick and delivered a devastating blow one play later as a 32-yard touchdown pass pushed their lead to 21-13 in a span of eight seconds. The Panthers tried to rally offensively to stem the bleeding but after a 19-yard run by Devodney Alford and a ten-yard pass to Je'Quan Burton, penalties pushed them back to their own 17 yard line, eventually leading to another punt. With 46 seconds left in the half, Seminole completed three passes for 28 yards and booted a 38-yard field goal as time expired to take a 24-13 lead into the break.

As play opened in the third quarter, everyone in the packed stadium knew Dr. Phillips needed a defensive stand to keep Seminole from pulling away...and on third and seven, they got it. Senior cornerback DJ Charles stepped in front of a pass at the 33 yard line and took it to the house for the team's 11th defensive touchdown of the season and more importantly, cut the Seminole lead to 24-20. With a revitalized sideline, the DP defense forced Seminole into another quick punt that Emare Hogan returned for 13 yards to the Seminole 49. Quarterback Marvin Washington picked up a first down run and three plays later, he found Emare Hogan deep down the left sideline for a 32-yard touchdown that gave the Panthers a 27-24 lead with 6:57 left in the third quarter. Seminole was undefeated for many reasons and one of those reasons is they continue to fight. They proved that on their ensuing possession as they drove 77 yards in 14 plays down to the DP three but, to DP's credit, the defense kept them out of the end zone, despite Seminole having first and goal at the Panthers' six yard line. Instead, the Seminoles opted for a 20-yard field goal to tie the game at 27-27 heading into the fourth quarter. After both teams traded punts, DP took over at their own 20 with 4:39 left in regulation but was forced to punt from their own 36. Sterling Stockwell picked the best time for his best punt of the night, booming a 47-yarder to the Seminole 17 with 1:25 left to play. On second and three from the 24, Seminole hit for a 44-yard pass play to the DP 32 but one play later, a holding call deep in the backfield sent them back 21 yards to the 47. After three completions for 33 yards gave them a first down at the DP 20, the Seminoles trotted out their field goal kicker for a seemingly routine 37-yard attempt that would have sent the Seminoles to the State Championship game. It wasn't to be, however, as the kick sailed wide left as time expired forcing overtime.

DP won the overtime coin toss and elected to play defense first. Seminole wasted no time, scoring on a ten-yard quarterback keeper to take a 34-27 lead but DP punched right back one play later when Emare Hogan charged into the end zone from ten yards out to tie the game at 34-34. In the second overtime DP took first possession and after Hogan ran twice for six yards, Xandre McCleary pounded in for two more down to the Seminole two. Without hesitation, DP coaches sent Sterling Stockwell out for the historic field goal attempt and the junior delivered the kick he and the Panther Nation will never forget.

Defensively, Dylan Meeks finished with 18 tackles, Nick Smith finished with a career-high 15, including four for a loss, and Henry Caldwell tallied a career-high 11 tackles. Robert Porcher closed with ten tackles, including two sacks, to give him sole possession of the season sack record with 17. Tanner Ingle, Brice Ingram and Jaquarri Powell each finished with nine tackles. Offensively, Marvin Washington completed 13 of 19 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown while Emare Hogan was the leading receiver with eight catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Dr. Phillips (12-2) heads to the 2016 State Championship at Camping World Stadium Saturday night at 8:00 pm where they'll host Miami Southridge (12-2). This is the second appearance in the title game for the Panthers, who fell in 2010 to Miami Central (41-27). Southridge will make their third appearance, having won the title outright in 1993 after tying Orlando Evans (22-22) for the title in 1991. In fact, that tie instigated the overtime format for the State Championship games as none existed previously and the result was unsettling to everyone involved. A limited amount tickets for the State Championship will be on sale at Dr. Phillips for $12.00 each. Tickets will be abundant at Camping World Stadium on game day or you can purchase them online through Ticketmaster at the link below. Remember, DP is the home team for this game so select your tickets for the West stands!
