DP Baseball kicked off their 2017 campaign at home with a preseason test against University and battled back from a two-run deficit to tie the Cougars, 6-6. The Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead, highlighted by three runs in the bottom of the third. James Hurst doubled to lead off the inning, went to third on Bailey Kossoff's bunt single and Hamzah Nobles drove both home with a double to center field. That lead didn't hold, though, as University scored three in the fourth and another three in the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers cut their deficit in half after August Haymaker doubled and scored on Mitchell Stockwell's RBI groundout. Now down 6-5 in the seventh, DP struck again in their final at bat. Bailey Kossoff reached base on an error, stole second, and came around to score on Will Sullivan's single to right before the game was called due to darkness. Cort Roedig got the start on the mound and pitched two perfect innings, striking out four, while Andrew Polansky and Casey Carns pitched scoreless innings in relief. DP will get back on the field Friday at home against Lake Minneola.
