Dylan Meeks takes State Runner-Up
3/5/2017 5:42:00 PM

At the Men's Wrestling State Tournament, three-time defending State Champion Dylan Meeks (26-1) came up just short in his fourth title bid, falling to South Dade's Kyron Taylor (49-0) in the 285 pound title bout, 5-4. Meeks, who won titles in 2014 at 195 pounds, 2015 at 220 pounds and in 2016 again at 220 pounds, gave away nearly 60 pounds to Taylor, the 285-pound defending State Champion. In his earlier matches, Meeks pinned William Laziman (34-12) of Vero Beach in 49 seconds, pinned Jaafari Stephens (32-3) of Coral Gables 14 seconds into the second period and then defeated Trayvonne Jackson (31-6) of Miami Killian by major decision, 11-0, to earn a berth in the title match. This is Meeks' second State Runner-Up finish, having earned the honor in 2013 as an eighth grader at CFCA. He graduates, without argument, as the best wrestler in Dr. Phillips High School history with a record of 139-2 (179-3 overall wrestling against high school competition) winner of three State Championships, two State Runner-Up finishes, five Regional Championships, five District Championships and four Metro West Championships. In addition, Meeks established the school record for consecutive victories with 123, which stretched from the beginning of his freshman season through this year's state semifinal match. An unbelievable athlete with amazing careers in both wrestling and football!
