Offensive tackle Darius Johnson earns the Apex Wealth Management Player of the Game in DP's 56-28 victory over Oak Ridge

Football doubles up Oak Ridge
10/23/2010

Demetrius Hart rushed for 126 yards on 21 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead Dr. Phillips Football to a 56-28 victory over visiting Oak Ridge on Homecoming.  DP found itself in unfamiliar territory, trailing for the better part of the first half, but exploded for 35 unanswered points in the second half to win going away.  Quaterback Nick Patti completed 13 of 19 passes for 190 yards and two scores and rushed for 97 yards and a score as the Panthers improve to 7-0, 3-0 in District 6 play.

Oak Ridge came out of the locker room with a strong plan, utilizing their speed effectively by marching 80 yards on ten plays to take a 7-0 lead on their opening drive.  As they did the entire first half, DP answered the call on their ensuing drive.  From their own 43, Patti connected with Pat Fenlon for an 11-yard gain, Chris Gallon for eight more and Dee Hart finished off the scoring drive with a 12-yard touchdown reception to tie the game at 7-7.  The Pioneers (5-2) punched back on their next drive, however, with a 73-yard touchdown pass play for a 14-7 lead at the end of the first period.

With just under eight minutes left in the second quarter, Dee Hart ignited the offense again, hauling in an 11-yard pass from Patti, rushing for 20 more and capping it off with a ten-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 14-14.  Oak Ridge kept the pressure on, however, hitting a 51-yard pass play and following up with a 22-yard touchdown pass to take the lead again, 21-14.  The Panthers punched back on their next drive in just 21 seconds.  Sophomore Jake Janse hauled in a 50-yard bomb from Patti and Dee Hart busted it in from three yards out to tie the game yet again at 21-21.  After the DP defense forced a punt with 1:58 left in the half, DP went to work again but Oak Ridge stepped in front of a Nick Patti pass and returned it 38 yards to the DP 24.  Five plays later, Oak Ridge connected on a one-yard touchdown pass and took a 28-21 lead into the half.

The second half was all Dr. Phillips.  DP came out of the locker room and it was clear to the crowd of 3,000 that the Panthers had had enough.  After Laquentin Smith recovered a Pioneer fumble deep inside Oak Ridge territory, Nick Patti found Chris Gallon in the right corner of the endzone for a 30-yard score to tie the game at 28-28.  DP would score on five consecutive drives.  Defensive end Jonathan Smith stuffed the Pioneers on fourth down with a nine-yard sack at the Oak Ridge 39 with 2:17 left in the third quarter.  Nick Patti ran for 19 yards, threw an eight-yard pass to Pat Fenlon for a first down and Dee Hart took it to the house from five yards out for a 35-28 DP lead at the start of the fourth.  On their next possession, DP drove 58 yards in nine plays with Patti punching it in from the one to push the lead to 42-28 with 6:39 left in the game.

The DP defense rose up again with K-Ron Jefferson's fourth sack of the year forcing a Pioneer punt with 4:55 to go.  All night, Oak Ridge had done a tremendous job not allowing DP's dangerous return team a chance to touch the football but this time it did not work.  Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix fielded the punt at the Oak Ridge 47 and raced down the right sideline for his second return touchdown of the year as the lead swelled to 49-28.  Later in the fourth quarter, Nick Patti took a keeper 51 yards down to the Oak Ridge nine to set up a nine-yard touchdown run by Joe Scott, his first touchdown of the year, for the 56-28 final.

DP set a school-record with 22 first downs, Shawn Moffitt connected on all eight extra point attempts to extend his streak of consecutive PATs to 85 and was also crowned Homecoming King at halftime.  The Panthers will travel to Gateway next Friday with an opportunity to clinch a playoff berth with a victory.
