Class 2A, fifth-ranked Flag Football traveled down to Osceola County to take on Class 1A, second-ranked Harmony and the Panthers came home with a thrilling 13-12 victory to improve to 9-0 on the season. DP got on the board on their first possession when Kaylee Messina connected with Nisa Costa for a touchdown on fourth and goal from the 18 and Aaliyah Govan tacked on the extra point to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead. Harmony responded with a 60-yard scoring pass to pull within one but couldn’t convert the extra point attempt to keep the margin at 7-6. DP wasted no time on their ensuing drive as Messina found Megan Lapeyrouse on a four-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 13-6 midway through the second quarter. Harmony went up top again and looked to score on a 70-yard touchdown pass but the play was negated by an illegal block in the backfield. With the score still 13-6 in the third quarter, the Panthers looked to score again but a fourth and 15 pass into the end zone was dropped for a turnover on downs. Later in the fourth, DP again drove down deep into Harmony territory but another fourth and goal pass was dropped in the end zone, this time with under two minutes left in the game. Now in possession and driving for a potential game-tying score, facing third and 17, Harmony picked up a big first down at midfield with 1:30 left. DP forced another fourth down attempt that the Longhorns converted to set up first and goal with 30 seconds left. On fourth and goal from the ten, the Panthers were flagged for illegal contact to give Harmony a first and goal at the five and later converted their fourth fourth-down attempt of the drive with a six-yard touchdown pass to pull within one, 13-12. With ten seconds left in the game, Harmony’s extra point pass attempt was batted away by Aaliyah Govan to preserve the victory. DP will now host Winter Park tonight before celebrating Senior Night Friday vs. University.
