Dr. Phillips Softball sets a school record with 19 wins in 2017

Softball falls in semifinal

While they tied the school record for most wins in a season and earned the best record in school history (19-8), Softball needed one more victory to push them to the Regional Tournament but it simply wasn't to be. DP took a 1-0, first inning lead on Lake Nona but couldn't buy another run until a last inning push in a 4-2 loss in the District Semifinal. Raychel Trocki roped a two-out double to right in the top of the first and scored on Kati Kelly's RBI single to center for a 1-0 lead but the Lions tied the score in the home second, plated a run in the third and two more in the fifth for a 4-1 lead. In the top of the seventh, DP loaded the bases before senior Nini Underwood drove in sophomore Dejia Benn with a two-out single to center to cut the deficit to 4-2, but that was all they could do. A tough loss, but a tremendous season as the team set an additional record for runs scored (207). Five individual records were set or tied as well: runs scored (Nini Underwood, 37), triples (Gracie Lopez, 5, tied), stolen bases (Nini Underwood, 40), fielding percentage (Hannah Eden, 1.000, tied) and pitching wins (Raychel Trocki, 19). WIth eight of nine starters returning next year, expectations will be high and certainly justified. Congratulations to head coach Mike Gale and the ladies on a great season!
