Men's Volleyball defeats Bishop Moore for the 2017 District Championship

Volleyball goes the distance with Freedom

Top-ranked and undefeated Freedom (28-0) came into the House of Payne last night having not surrendered more than one game in any of their previous 27 matches but they got pushed to the final bell against Dr. Phillips before pulling out a 15-11 victory in the decisive game five of the State Tournament play-in match. DP (19-7) took an early 9-7 lead in game one and stayed with the Patriots through the late stages but Freedom outscored the Panthers, 7-1, down the stretch to take a 25-19 win. Game two saw DP even the match at a game apiece with a 25-22 victory but the momentum was short-lived. Freedom jumped out to a seven-point advantage in game three, 18-11, before DP closed within two but, again, Freedom pulled away in the waning moments for a 25-20 victory. DP’s student section picked up the energy in game four and it paid off. After a 10-10 tie, the Panthers surged with a 12-5 run and evened the match once again with a 25-20 victory to set up the fifth and final set. DP got off to a shaky start in game five, conceding the first three points and simply couldn’t make up that ground the rest of the way as Freedom continued their undefeated run with a 15-11 victory. Statistically, DP had its most impressive match of the season. Junior Sam Barnett led the way with 19 kills, seven digs, four blocks and a pair of aces while Jon Diedrich closed out his sophomore campaign with a double-double with ten digs, ten kills and two blocks. Junior Blake Inlow finished with 34 assists, seven digs and a block; sophomore Jordan Poventud totaled 10.5 blocks, eight kills; senior Damian Rivera tallied 13 digs and junior Isaac Word finished with four kills and a block. Despite the finish, there should be no disappointment whatsoever for the Panthers. They finished a tremendous season as Metro West Champions for the fourth consecutive year and District Champions for the first time since 2011. Outstanding senior leadership from Damian Rivera, Danny Somavilla, Spencer Kahn and Arthur DaFonseca was critical this year and with four of six starters returning next year, that same effective leadership will be equally important as the team looks to build on its success. Congratulations to the team as well as head coach Jeremy Fonnett on an amazing debut season!
