Junior pitcher Cort Roedig shuts down Freedom in the District Semifinal (2017)

Baseball wins District thriller
5/4/2017 9:40:00 AM

Dr. Phillips Baseball trailed host Freedom, 1-0, for five innings but came back to tie the game in the sixth and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh for a 2-1 victory in the District Semifinal. After allowing a run to Freedom in the top of the second, junior hurler Cort Roedig pitched a masterpiece, allowing only one hit while striking out five in a complete game victory. In the sixth, freshman Brandon Fields   led off the inning with a sharp single to center and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sebastian Oetterer. With two outs, up to the plate came senior captain Bailey Kossoff. Nagged by a lingering hamstring injury, Kossoff limped up to the plate reminiscent of 1988 World Series hero Kirk Gibson...and in legendary Gibson fashion, Kossoff punched a single into right field to score Fields to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the seventh, the stage was set again for more DP heroics. With one out, Raymond Negron walked on four pitches and moved to second on a base hit to right by Hamzah Nobles. After a pitching change by Freedom, August Haymaker drove a 1-1 pitch into right field to bring home Raymond Negron with the game-winning run to send the Panthers (19-7) to the District Championship game Friday, and more importantly, secured a Regional Tournament berth next week!
