Flag Football wins the 2017 Regional Championship and a trip to the Final Four in Gainesville

Flag Football finishes 16-1
5/28/2017 12:55:00 PM

After taking down top-ranked Martin County and defeating Fleming Island, 20-6, to advance to the Final Four, Flag Football finally met its match with Tampa Plant as the Panthers fell in Gainesville, 33-14. DP (16-1) got on the board first when senior quarterback Kaylee Messina found sophomore Nisa Costa in the corner of the end zone for a 7-0 lead in the second quarter. Plant responded quickly, though, with a pair of touchdowns to take a 13-7 lead into the halftime break. After a third consecutive Plant touchdown, DP found itself down 20-7 late in the third quarter but Aaliyah Govan took a short pass from Messina on fourth and five and converted it into a 35-yard touchdown play to close the margin to 20-14. DP was poised to to take the lead again after an interception by Nisa Costa but couldn't take advantage of the opportunity as Plant scored twice more on long touchdown receptions to win going away, 33-14. A great season for the Panthers, regardless of the disappointing finish, and certainly one to remember. The Panthers earned their sixth Metro title, 11th District Championship and fifth State Final Four appearance while capping extraordinary careers by seniors Kaylee Messina, Tiffany Tolbert, Rukayla WInters, Camryn Williams and Alexandra Regis. Congratulations to coach Anthony Jones and the entire team on a remarkable season and representing DP so well all year long!
