Davarius Bargnare's two kickoff return touchdowns and two TD receptions lead DP to a 41-6 thrashing of Oak Ridge (2017)

Second half surge buries Oak Ridge
9/30/2017 10:46:00 AM

Host Oak Ridge gave Dr. Phillips Football all they could handle in the early going, holding the Panthers to just 72 yards of offense in a scoreless first half, but the Panthers exploded for six consecutive touchdowns after the break in a 41-6 demolition of the Pioneers. In addition to the victory being DP's 37th consecutive win in district play, it was also the 22nd consecutive win over Oak Ridge dating back through 1990 and improved their series record to 24-1. Senior receiver Davarius Bargnare set career-highs in return yardage (176) and scoring (four touchdowns), taking two second half kickoffs to the house, caught a pair of touchdown passes and accounted for 276 all-purpose yards. Senior running back Devodney Alford eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the fourth time in as many games and sophomore linebacker Stephen Dix netted a career-high 13 tackles, including five sacks on the night.

Credit Oak Ridge with solid clock management in the first half. Despite not getting into the end zone they controlled the pace of the game offensively, keeping DP's explosive offense off the field, but the Panther defense was even more noteworthy. Early in the second quarter Oak Ridge drove down to the DP two but came away with nothing. On second and goal, Brice Ingram and Tanner Ingle plugged the hole inside and stuffed a run for a loss of a yard and on fourth and goal from the three, senior defensive tackle Shawn Evans did the same for a loss of three to force the turnover on downs. From a highlight standpoint, that was it for the first half. While the DP alumni in attendance for the 30th anniversary of the rivalry and the rest of the Panther Nation may have been uneasy, the team regrouped inside and the coaches made the proper adjustments that quickly turned a nailbiter into a rout.

On the opening kickoff of the second half, Davarius Bargnare fielded the ball at his own 13 behind Tanner Ingle, who delivered a devastating block at the 20, and turned on the burners straight up the field 87 yards unscathed for a DP touchdown. Immediately, the DP defense was energized and it showed up on the field on Oak Ridge's ensuing drive. On second and 15 from the 35, Stephen Dix chased down the Oak Ridge quarterback for a four-yard loss and followed up with another sack on the very next play to force a punt. The Panthers went right back to work from the Oak Ridge 46. After BeSean McCray scrambled for seven yards, Devodney Alford charged through the line and slipped into the secondary for a 33-yard gain down to the Oak Ridge 11. One play later, McCray rolled out of the pocket to his right and saw Trey Schyck pull away from his defender down the sideline and hit the sophomore for an 11-yard score to double the lead to 14-0 at the 5:45 mark.

The offensive misery continued for Oak Ridge on their next possession as junior Cameron Williams sacked the quarterback for a three-yard loss that forced another punt which set up three scores in three plays for the Panthers. From midfield, BeSean McCray found Davarius Bargnare for a 15-yard gain and followed up with Bargnare again on third and 13 with a laser across the middle for a 38-yard touchdown to push the lead to 21-0. Junior linebacker Jaquarri Powell got in on the sack party on the next Pioneer drive, dropping the Oak Ridge quarterback for a pair of losses on first and third downs and DP took possession at the Pioneer 38. On first down, McCray hit Bargnare on a screen pass to the DP sideline and Bargnare turned it back inside, sidestepped three defenders, eluded two more and raced 38 yards into the end zone for his third touchdown of the night. Up 28-0 and in complete control, things admittedly got sloppy on Oak Ridge's ensuing possession. Despite another sack by Stephen Dix, the Panthers committed three critical penalties that gave Oak Ridge three free first downs which led to their only touchdown of the night. But any momentum they may have enjoyed was washed away on the kickoff as Davarius Bargnare fielded the kickoff at his own 11, sprinted straight up the middle again and pulled away for another touchdown, this time for 89 yards, tying the school record for return scores in a game held also by Dee Hart, Roderick Proctor and Tanner Ingle. Now with a 34-6 lead, DP tacked on seven more on their next drive as Devodney Alford carried twice for 21 yards and sophomore Brandon Fields skated untouched for a 20-yard touchdown run to deliver the 41-6 final.

Dr. Phillips (4-0) held Oak Ridge to minus two yards rushing and limited the Pioneers to just 90 yards of total offense. Junior Jaquarri Powell finished with five tackles, including three sacks, while senior Brice Ingram tallied six tackles. Senior Joe Gulla picked up five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble and junior Tarvon Young notched his first career interception to close out the game. Devodney Alford averaged nearly ten yards per carry as he finished the night with 109 yards rushing on just 11 carries. The Panthers now enter a stretch that will give them three games in eight days: at Wekiva Thursday, home vs. Apopka Monday and then on the road at Freedom the following Friday.
