Japerri Powell (8) and Stephen Dix (29) move in for a tackle against Orange City University (2017)

Football stifled by Wekiva
10/7/2017 12:55:00 AM

A driving second-half rain and two stingy defenses made for lackluster offensive performances by both teams but host Wekiva was able to capitalize on two late DP turnovers in a 14-0 victory Thursday night. DP (4-1) came into the game averaging well over 300 yards in offense per game but Wekiva held the Panthers to just 76 total yards while snapping a 143-game scoring streak that dated back to 2006. While the offense had little to boast about, the DP defense had a strong night, holding Wekiva to just 168 yards of total offense and one offensive score. Sophomore Stephen Dix led the Panthers with a career-high 15 tackles with senior Bobby Johnson (career-high 11 tackles), junior Japerri Powell (ten tackles, sack) and senior Joe Gulla (nine tackles, four for loss) adding outstanding performances.

Scoring opportunities were few for the Panthers save for two drives. Late in the first quarter, Sterling Stockwell's 50-yard punt pinned Wekiva at their own three yard line and the Panthers forced a punt four plays later, taking over with outstanding field position at the Wekiva 34. DP couldn't convert on fourth down, however, and gave up the football at the Wekiva 26. Midway through the third quarter, the Panthers had another golden opportunity to break the scoreless tie when senior Tarrie Reese recovered a Wekiva fumble at their 31 but the Mustangs intercepted BeSean McCray's third down pass to thwart the drive. Reese came up big again defensively on Wekiva's ensuing possession. On third and five from the Wekiva 46, a Mustang receiver got behind the defense for a 52-yard reception and what should have been a touchdown but Reese never gave up on the play, made the tackle at the two, jarred the football loose short of the goal line and Tanner Ingle recovered the fumble in the end zone for the touchback.

Heading into the fourth quarter with neither team able to move the ball consistently, Wekiva was able to take advantage of two Panther miscues. DP faced fourth and less than a yard for a first down at their own 45. Looking to gain some momentum and give the offense a lift, the Panthers elected to go for it on fourth down but the snap and handoff exchange were mishandled for a loss of seven yards resulting in a turnover on downs at the DP 38. Two plays later, Wekiva scored on a 36-yard run to take a 7-0 lead. On DP's next possession, McCray's second down pass was intercepted for a touchdown to seal the victory for Wekiva.

DP has no time to dwell on the loss as they host Apopka Monday night at 7:00 pm in a game that was postponed due to Hurricane Irma. Monday is Military Appreciation Night in the Spoone where all current and former military members are admitted free with proper identification. Please show your spirit and patriotism by wearing red, white and blue! We will also be hosting our DP Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading teams as well.
