BeSean McCray threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns against Apopka to earn the Apex Wealth Management Player of the Game (2017)

Apopka holds off late DP rally
10/10/2017 10:54:00 AM

For the second time in five days, DP Football went up against one of the top defenses in Central Florida and despite a strong second half rally, the Panthers came up short in a 21-14 loss to visiting Apopka. DP (4-2) spotted the Blue Darters a 14-0 first quarter lead before quarterback BeSean McCray led the Panthers to a pair of second half scores. McCray finished the night 13-24 passing for 190 yards and a pair of touchdown tosses and also rushed for a team-high 62 yards on six carries.

After a lackluster first half that saw four DP drives end in three punts and a turnover on downs, the Panthers took the opening possession of the second half 74 yards in seven plays to cut Apopka's lead in half, 14-7. Devodney Alford rushed for a first down at the DP 38 and five plays later, took a screen pass from McCray and followed a tremendous block from center Michael MacNeil and a driving downfield block from Davarius Bargnare for a 55-yard touchdown at the 7:56 mark. Apopka responded with a quick score on their next possession to go back up by two touchdowns but DP tightened the game up in the fourth. Apopka drove down to the Panthers' 32 but on fourth and four, junior linebacker Japerri Powell shed a block and stuffed the run for a one-yard loss to give the ball back to DP. The Panthers took over at their own 33 and immediately BeSean McCray slipped through into the secondary for a 42-yard gain. Four plays later McCray called his own number again for a two-yard gain to convert on fourth and short at the Apopka 14. McCray then found Devon Buckhanon, who made a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch in the right corner of the end zone to pull the Panthers to 21-14.

The DP defense stepped up once again on Apopka's ensuing possession when Bobby Johnson and Demarquis Cummings teamed up for a critical fourth down stop at the DP ten yard line to give the Panthers one final breath. With two minutes remaining in regulation, DP faced fourth and 12 from their own eight before McCray connected with Davarius Bargnare for a 21-yard gain and a first down at the 29. McCray then found Devodney Alford out of the backfield for what would have been another big gain but a holding call behind the line of scrimmage negated the play and resulted in an 18-yard loss. Despite subsequent completed passes to Michael Fox and Jacquez Jones, the penalty yardage was too much to overcome and the Panthers ran out of downs and, eventually, time.

Another tough loss that might be difficult to digest in the short term but DP battled valiantly in the second half and has much to take with them into this week's critical district contest at Freedom Friday night. One week later, DP will host Olympia in the Spoone in a game that requires no explanation of importance.
