Football unloads on Freedom, 35-8
10/14/2017 1:30:00 PM

After being shutout in the first half for three consecutive games, Dr. Phillips Football made it a priority to get off to a fast start Friday night at Freedom. DP (5-2) scored on four of its five possessions in the first half and added a defensive score as well in a 35-8 shellacking of the host Patriots, their 12th consecutive victory in the series having outscored Freedom 150-11 over the last four meetings. Quarterback BeSean McCray completed 11 of 13 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 91 yards and two scores.

The Panthers drove 74 yards in six plays on their opening touchdown drive, converting on fourth and inches when McCray faked a handoff to Devodney Alford, slipped outside tackle John Campbell and raced 49 yards for a touchdown for a 7-0 lead. Freedom didn't have much of an opportunity to respond on their first drive, fumbling the football inside their own 20 on the first snap which was scooped up by Stephen Dix, who coasted 18 yards for another touchdown. Up 14-0 just two minutes into the game, the Panthers didn't let up. After Freedom fumbled a punt attempt for a ten-yard loss, DP took over at the Freedom 42 and it took just 34 seconds to capitalize. McCray ran for 13 and 11 yards on consecutive carries before hitting Devon Buckhanon on a short pass and the junior receiver barrelled down the visiting sideline for an 18-yard touchdown to push the lead to 21-0 in just the first quarter.

Freedom could not get anything going offensively in the second quarter either. After the Panthers forced another punt, DP took over at the Freedom 45 where McCray hit Michael Fox for an 11-yard gain, Trey Schyck for 25 yards down to the Freedom seven and capped the six-play drive with a one-yard touchdown pass from McCray to Fox for a 28-0 lead. With 2:12 left in the half the Panthers continued to hunt, taking possession at the Freedom 45 once again. Michael Fox hauled in a pair of passes from McCray for 18 yards and Jacquez Jones took a short pass 18 more yards down to the Freedom seven. Two plays later, BeSean McCray thanked Devodney Alford for a good block and slipped into the end zone for a four-yard touchdown run for DP's final score. Up 35-0, a running clock was instituted for the remainder of the second quarter and the entire second. Offensive numbers were not overly impressive as a result and the Panthers had but one possession the entire second half. Defensively, the Panthers held Freedom to just 139 yards, 99 of which came on their final drive of the night. Brice Ingram registered six tackles, two for loss and forced a fumble. Devon Charitable picked up six tackles, while Jaquarri Powell, Cam Williams and Tanner Ingle added five tackles each.

DP's victory puts them at 2-0 in the district with Friday night's upcoming game against Olympia the District Championship. DP has beaten Olympia 14 consecutive times since 2004 and leads the overall series 16-2. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm in the Spoone where the Panthers will also be celebrating Homecoming so please plan on arriving early. Presale tickets for the game will be sold during lunch on the south campus beginning Wednesday. Buy your tickets early!
