Freshman outfielder Brandon Fields (left) vs. University (2017)
After rain washed out the initial date, DP Baseball picked up a solid 5-1 victory over visiting Lyman on Opening Day at John Barbati Field Thursday. The Panthers got on the board quickly in the first inning when Bailey Kossoff led off with a walk and scored on Brandon Fields' two-out single to left to take a 1-0 lead. After Lyman knotted up the score with a run in the third, DP strung together back-to-back two-run innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Brandon Fields led off with a double into left field and scored on Hamzah Nobles' double to right. After a wild pitch sent Nobles to third, Chris Bryan brought him home with an RBI base hit for a 3-1 lead. In the fifth, August Haymaker jumped on a 1-0 pitch and smacked a single to center before Will Sullivan laced a line drive double to center to bring Haymaker home. Sullivan would come home two batters later when James Hurst reached on an error for the final margin. On the mound, Cort Roedig surrendered just one run on three hits while striking out five in four innings of work to pick up the victory. Casey Carns and Alex Warren combined to pitch three scoreless innings of relief while striking out three. DP (1-0) is back at it against Lake Mary today at 4:00.
