Baseball defeated Boone, 9-3, to earn the 2019 District Championship

Olympia pulls away in Regional
5/16/2019 1:00:00 AM

Baseball was able to scratch out a run in the first inning and drew even in the second with another but a four-run burst by Olympia in the sixth powered the Titans to a 7-2 victory over DP in Regional Quarterfinal action. DP (20-7) drew first blood in the bottom of the first when CJ Cantwell laced a double into the right field corner and scored on an error off the bat of Brandon Fields. Olympia responded with a two-run home run in the second but DP clawed right back in the home second. After Carlos Lopez was hit by a pitch to open the inning and advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt, Derek Arroyo chopped one over the top of a drawn-in infield to knot the game at 2-2. That score held up for three more innings but Olympia erupted for four runs on six hits in the sixth to win going away. As disappointing an ending as it was for the Panthers, it does nothing to negate another tremendous season for the senior class of 2019. Will Sullivan completed arguably the best single season in program history, setting or tying no less than four school records, including highest batting average (.541, eclipsing Mark Nelson's record of .513 set in 2009), doubles (13), home runs (11, tied with Paul Penitani, 2000) and RBIs (36, tied with A.J Pierzynski, 1994). Sullivan also finished the year with 40 hits, which is second all-time behind Mark Nelson (41, 2009). DP also broke the school record for team batting average (.331), shattering the previous mark of .323 set back in 1999. CJ Cantwell (.317, 3 home runs, 9 doubles, 14 RBIs, 28 runs, 16 stolen bases), Jacob Hartman (.278, 3 home runs, 4 doubles, 14 RBIs, 17 runs, 10 stolen bases), Diego Garcia (.257, 1 home run, 6 doubles, 17 RBIs), Raymond Negron Valero (.388, 5 doubles, 16 RBIs, 21 runs, 16 stolen bases), James Hurst (.429, 3 doubles, 7 RBIs, 12 runs, 4 stolen bases), Logan Bryan (4-1, 2 saves, 48 strikeouts, 1.97 ERA), Mitchell Stockwell (4-1, 49 strikeouts, 2.25 ERA) and Casey Carns (3-1, 12 strikeouts, 1.61 ERA) all gave everything they had for this program and for that, we thank them for extraordinary memories and for bringing our program back to prominence over the last four years. Congratulations to the entire team and to coach Ray Evans and his staff on a tremendous year!
