Men's Water Polo falls in District final
4/10/2019 8:59:00 AM

In a classic DP vs. Olympia matchup, Men's Water Polo gave the defending State Champions a great game but a third quarter run by Olympia was the difference in an 18-14 loss in the District Championship. DP (21-6) took an 8-6 lead midway through the second quarter but two quick scores by the Titans knotted the game at 8-8 by halftime. In the third quarter, Olympia surged ahead with a 5-2 scoring run to take a 15-11 lead and that turned out to be the difference as both teams added three goals each in the fourth. Senior James Sweet closed out his career with a spectacular showing, scoring a team-high five goals with two assists and two steals. Senior Max Meisenheimer scored four goals and assisted on another and added two steals while freshman Sole Fratila scored four goals, assisted on two more and collected two steals. Sophomore Max Collingwood rounded out the scoring with a solo goal and senior goaltender Gabe Madej stopped a career-high 16 shots with an assist and three steals. Junior Adrian Britto led the squad with four assists, senior Dan Magrino finished with two assists and a steal and senior Gavin Collins closed out with two steals.

With the loss comes the end of an extraordinary career for each of our five seniors. Max Meisenheimer, who finished the season with 83 goals and 52 assists, second on the team in both categories, as well as 39 steals and five field blocks, graduates as the program's all-time leader in career goals (433) and goals in a game (13) and will be continuing his career at the University of California-Irvine in the fall. Dan Magrino's senior season concluded with 58 goals and led the team in three categories: assists (69), steals (92) and field blocks (20). Magrino also holds all-time records for career assists (259) and assists in a season (84) and will be playing club for the University of Florida next fall. One of the best defenders in school history, James Sweet finished the year with 50 goals, 36 assists and was second on the team in both steals (74) and field blocks (11). Sweet leaves as the all-time leader in career steals (286) and steals in a season (113) and will be attending Santa Fe College before playing club polo for the University of Florida. Captain Gavin Collins wrapped up his senior season with 40 goals, 14 assists, 30 steals, four field blocks and led the team with 33 sprint victories. Goaltender Gabe Madej had the responsibility of replacing a legend in Tyler Haugh two years ago and learned his new position faster and better than anyone could have anticipated. He finished the season with 222 saves, 31 assists and 37 steals and will continue his career also playing for the University of Florida club team. Congratulations to each of them on a phenomenal career and most importantly on their leadership. Most teams are fortunate enough to have one or two seniors that consistently exemplify leadership and commitment...we had five who gave everything they had to the program from day one and always represented the school with class in victory as well as in defeat. They will be missed.
