2019 Women's Water Polo seniors Julia Batzer, Alexandra Montero, Brittney Bonnin and Peyton Haines

Women's Water Polo falls to Olympia
4/10/2019 9:36:00 AM

Women's Water Polo broke out strong defensively and played even with Olympia in the first half but the Panthers couldn't find the net in the final two quarters in a 9-3 loss in the District Championship last night in the Aquatic Center. Ana Luisa Cotta found the back of the net twice and Hope Miller accounted for the third goal that sent DP into the halftime break tied, 3-3. In the third quarter, Olympia struck twice to take a 5-3 lead and added four more unanswered goals in the fourth to win going away. Ana Luisa Cotta and Hannah Harris both led the way defensively with four steals each while goaltender Samantha Horency finished with six saves, two steals and an assist. DP finished their 2019 campaign with a record of 17-9 and graduates four seniors, including defensive standout and captain Brittney Bonnin (14 goals, 44 assists, 42 steals), two-year starter Peyton Haines (32 goals, 23 assists, 21 steals), Julia Batzer (seven goals, five assists, 24 steals) and Alexandra Montero (three goals, three steals). While the season ends on a disappointing note, congratulations to all four seniors on their impressive careers, which included a District Championship in 2018.

The torch has now been passed to our returning players to continue to build the program towards a return to the State Tournament and that's an attainable goal. Ana Luisa Cotta, who finished the year with a team-leading 88 goals along with 36 assists, 90 steals and a school-record 17 field blocks returns for her senior year, as does goaltender Sam Horency, who finished the season with 211 saves, 46 assists and a team-high 93 steals while also scoring three goals. Hope Miller also returns after setting a career-high total for goals scored (59) and sophomore Hannah Harris also returns after setting career-best marks for goals (35), assists (15) and steals (48). Congratulations to all the ladies on a strong season!
