Women's Relay State Runners-Up
5/5/2019 12:50:00 PM

In the storied history of Dr. Phillips Women's Track and Field, not once in 32 years have the Panthers earned a State-Runner-Up finish in any relay event but history was made Saturday in Jacksonville. Armed with senior veteran Ebone Fortilien, sophomore Shakaeja Dore and freshmen phenoms Lourdes Safford and Rayanna Mathis, the Panthers stunned the field with a school-record time of 47.54 to capture the silver medal, the best 4 x 100m relay finish in school history. Fortilien, who was a freshman on the 2016 record-setting team (48.00) with Jovani Culver, Alahni Wood and Jada Sobratti, is now a two-time record-setting relay sprinter, and helped her teammates shatter the original record twice on Saturday with a time of 47.68 in prelims and .14 seconds faster in the finals. Senior Zoe Alexander qualified for state in three events, including the 400m, where she turned in her fastest performance of the season (57.46) that netted her a 14th-place finish. In the long jump, Alexander placed 16th with a leap of 16' 8.5" and also anchored the 4 x 400m relay team of freshman Jarvia Carr, junior Domanique Douglas, freshman Rayanna Mathis and Alexander to a season-best time of 3:58.05, good for 13th place. Douglas also qualified in the triple jump, placing 23rd overall, with a jump of 34' 2.25" while sophomore Irmiris Mendez was DP's top individual finisher, taking home 13th place in the 300m hurdles in 46.87. As a team, the Panthers earned a total of eight points, placing 27th in the field of 53 scoring teams. Congratulations to all the ladies, and to first year head coach Boris Jackson, on an outstanding season!
